What Is Sanitizing?
Sanitizing is the act of removing and/or killing bacteria from surfaces.
For instance, when you use scrubbers on your bathroom floor, this is just cleaning it. But scrubbing with a specific sanitizing product will be considered sanitizing, as you're removing and killing harmful germs. Do note that this doesn't necessarily mean the surface is clean.
Another good example is when you use hand sanitizers (note the name). These will be effective in eliminating most bacteria from your hands, but not necessarily all viruses.
When it comes to FDA approval for sanitizing products, it's not as rigorous as with disinfecting products (more on that later).
What Is Disinfecting?
Disinfecting is very similar to sanitizing, which is why most people think the 2 are synonymous. However, the key difference is the strength.
Disinfecting not only removes and kills bacteria, but also viruses. Disinfecting products can also remove the majority of these harmful germs, which better protects your health.
These products will pass rigorous tests from the FDA and EPA, as they must be proven to kill both types of germs. If you want to specifically kill viruses, you'll notice that you can't find any products that are sanitizer-only. Instead, they'll be sanitizing and disinfecting.
Combine Sanitizing and Disinfecting for Maximum Effects
Now that you know the difference between sanitizing and disinfecting, you should be aware that you need both for your optimal health.
In addition, you should have good cleaning processes so it doesn't encourage the growth of any bacteria or viruses that may be around. This includes washing your hands for 20 seconds with warm water and soap. If you don't have access to this, then make sure you use a hand sanitizer that has at least 60% alcohol for the best results.
